Northeast Ohio has plenty of urban attractions, but some of the region’s best appeals are nature-based outdoor hikes. While many people know about state and national parks, such as the 33,000-acre Cuyahoga Valley National Park, you may not be aware of local favorites.

The Merriman and Cuyahoga Valleys have several beloved sites for a walk or hike that appeal to beginners and advanced adventurers alike. Let’s look at four of our favorites.

The Freedom Hiking Trail

The 6.2-mile Freedom Trail follows a former railroad corridor and has all the wildlife amenities you can imagine, including possible sightings of bald eagles, coyotes, and white-tailed deer. The level, paved path includes towering trees and a wide array of scenery. It’s ideal for strollers, mountain bikes, cross-country skis, and snowshoes. Be courteous to stay on the right so as to leave room for other hikers and bikers.

Goodyear Heights Park Hiking Route

The Goodyear Heights Metro Park trails are among Akron’s most beginner-friendly outdoor spots. The Alder Trail Loop is only 1.4 miles long. The path rewards those who explore it with colorful trees, plant life, a sprawling playfield, and one of the state’s best sunrise views.

Goodyear Heights is the ideal location for first-time hiking groups who want to see the best of Ohio without straining themselves.

Adam Run Trail

The Adam Run Trail into the Cuyahoga Valley is perfect for experienced adventurers looking for a relaxing way to spend time hiking outdoors. You’ll be climbing and descending slopes both gentle and steep, as well as steps, and cruising along the ridge line. Pass through pine groves and follow sparkling brooks.

Adam Run is a 3.3-mile loop trail: a bit too long for newcomers but maybe not long enough for seasoned pros. However, anyone interested will stumble into a great spot for birdwatching and running.

The Towpath Trail

Walking the 87-mile Towpath Trail along the Ohio & Erie Canal from end-to-end is a historic adventure through Northeast Ohio following in the footsteps of the famous mules that pulled the canal boats up and down the canal between 1827-1913, carrying passengers and cargo. It’s a level path for hiking outdoors that includes historical trail markers and visitor centers that provide fascinating information about the historical, cultural, and natural resources of the area.

Hiking Gear You’ll Need

Before you begin hiking outdoors, be sure you’ve prepared for the trail ahead.

Hiking Boots

Most day hikers can complete their favorite trails in their standard walking shoes, but if you have sensitive feet or aren’t used to long hikes, you should wear hiking shoes for better support, especially if snow is on the ground or if you’re hiking in mountains.

Comfortable Clothes

Hiking etiquette dictates that you dress for the occasion, so wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes, depending on the weather. Practice good decision-making and prioritize outfits that keep you cool and allow easy movement.

Food and Water

While many hikers will enjoy most of the Akron area’s best trails as a day hike, some paths are longer and more demanding than others. Be sure to pack food and ample hydration to ensure that you go the distance without losing stamina.
