A picture is worth a thousand words. This phrase began 99 years ago and is still used to this day because it is so true. Seeing is believing, I’ll believe it when I see it, Actions speak louder than words, Don’t tell me – Show me. All of these are commonly used and refer to the point that seeing something means and says so much more than words ever could. Photography is a huge industry, one of the biggest in the world, used by individuals, families, businesses, celebrities, and really just everyone. When getting pictures done, or photographing others, you are looking for that “WOW” factor. The photo that truly captures its subject in an original and beautiful way.

Creativity is key in photography, no one wants to see posed smiling photos over and over in a shoot. Yes – people get professional photos done for the quality, but with the advancements in cell phone camera technology, the need for professional photography will also have to do with the originality they can provide. In a studio there are different options and aspects that can be manipulated in order to create the exciting and unique shots that people want.

Subjects are arguably the most important part of a photo. People, objects, food, pets, are all things that can be photographed. One way to creatively capture a subject is to choose a theme.

Single Subject Shot Ideas:

  • Combine natural lighting, or a single lighting source, with using flash to create more evocative images.

  • Try Self-Portraits – silhouette photography, extreme close up, vintage shot, or make a diptych or triptych.

  • Window Shot. Capturing an image through a window give you a multitude of options for creativity.

  • Pick a vague but common theme (reflections, silhouettes, the color red, circles, windows) and photograph the subject in at least 3 to 5 unique ways.

Group Shot Ideas:

  • Recreate classic paintings. Drop iconic poses into a whole new environment, or create a makeshift environment that has just enough similar elements to be understood.

  • Aerial View

  • Outfit selection can be used to make your photo stand out, you can travel back in time, go fancy, or travel anywhere in the world by choosing the right outfit.

  • Candid Style can capture the most genuine photos, let the group talk and relax and then begin shooting those pictures

  • Conceptual photoshoot where you never take a photo of their face.

Props can be used to add another element in a photograph. This is a simple way to have your photos stand out from the rest. Ideas for props include:

  • Vintage board games for the family photos, capture the fun of family game night

  • Bubbles are fun to use and also provides other opportunities for a unique shot.

  • Food can be incorporated to show joys of sharing a meal, the fun of a food fight, roasting marshmallows in the campfire scene you create.

Action Shots

  • Throw an object (or even a person) something as simple as throwing a ball up can be manipulated into a magic shot. Catching a photo of throwing your child in the air can give you joy and excitement in the picture and it is fun to look at.

  • The Jump shot with a single person or group may be hard to get the perfect midair jump but will more than likely be worth the effort.

  • Capture a flip or cartwheel in steps. If someone can do a flip, cartwheel or even just a somersault you can capture multiple photos and create one exciting photo.
