What are the benefits of daily stretching?
The first, and maybe the most apparent, benefit is that stretching improves flexibility and range of motion. Stretching has also been shown to improve your posture and prevent headaches from neck and head tension. Stretching also can improve mental health by relieving stress– it’s a relaxing exercise that can clear your head and make you feel calm. What stretches can you do to achieve all of these benefits?
Back Stretches
People of all ages struggle with back pain from things like working out or sitting at a desk all day. One of the best stretches for this is to try laying on your stomach while propping yourself up with your arms. This stretch focuses on your upper and middle back, so be sure not to strain your lower back.
If you are struggling with lower back pain, you can try laying flat on your back with one leg bent. Then, bring your knee to your chest and hold this position for about 30 seconds for each leg.
The last back stretch to try is the seated spine twist. This is performed by sitting down with one leg extended and the other leg bent with your foot planted on the ground on the other side of the extended leg. Next, put the arm opposite of the extended leg on the outside of the bent leg and twist your back.
Neck Stretches
One of the simplest neck stretches is the head roll. You do this by standing up straight and moving your head downwards toward your chest. From there, move your head clockwise 3 times. After this, rotate your head counterclockwise 3 times. This stretches your entire spine while improving spinal mobility.
Shoulder Stretches
The perfect stretch to loosen tight shoulders is a yoga pose called the child’s pose. This stretch is performed by sitting on your knees with the top of your feet touching the ground. Sit back on your heels, then, extend your arms above your head, bend forward and touch the ground with the palms of your hands.
After doing these 5 exercises in the morning, your mind and your body will feel refreshed and ready to take on the day. Your back, neck, and shoulders will feel loose and relaxed. These stretches can also improve your posture. If you want more personalized, and extensive stretches, try Holistic Massotherapy’s yoga classes or physical training services!
