Summer is coming to a close, and the kids are headed back to school. So trimming and pruning your trees is probably the last thing on your mind. Luckily, with the kids back in school, you’ll probably have more time on your hands. We encourage you to use some of that time to take care of your lawn and yard, especially your trees. It could save you a lot of time, money, and frustration…and I’ll tell you why.
But first, let’s start off with the difference between trimming and pruning.
Tree Trimming
Trimming is primarily focused on the aesthetics of the tree. For the most part, trimming involves thinning out overgrown branches and giving your tree or shrub a more defined shape. Just making a few snips here or there can really make your tree and your property appearance much sharper. Of course, this is again only focusing on the appearance and not taking into account other areas of possible concern, which leads us to tree pruning.
Tree Pruning
Pruning is primarily focused on the tree’s overall health and longevity, but, when you prune your trees, you’re also contributing to the tidying up of the tree making it flow much better. When pruning a tree, you’re looking for limbs and branches that could pose a hazard to you and your property. For example, pruning is a great time to remove those branches that have weakened over time. These branches will probably be the first to fall during the next strong wind storm or snowstorm. When branches fall, they can damage your home, car, or yourself. These falling branches can also cause further damage to the tree itself, if they fall onto lower branches.
Tree trimming and pruning can drastically diminish the potential of a tree falling and the potential damage that could be caused. The end of summer and the beginning of fall is the perfect time to trim and prune those trees. Especially if you live in Northeast Ohio! We can all agree, when it comes to the weather, you never know what you’re going to get, so it’s better to prepare for the worst.
While we hope you never find yourself or your property damaged from a fallen tree limb, we want you to be prepared if it happens. If your home should be damaged, we recommend giving your local SERVPRO a call. With over 1,700 locations, SERVPRO provides 24/7 emergency cleanup. If you live in Northeast Ohio, try their Portage County office, their Northern Summit office, or their Canton office.
